Abstract: The transformation from traditional teaching venues to technology-enhanced learning spaces has become a research focus as there is growing dissatisfaction with the suitability of conventional teaching spaces to meet pedagogical needs identified by learning sciences. Advancements in information technology have quickened the transformation. The seminar will first explain the meanings of technology-enhanced learning spaces and reasons for their growing popularity. It will analyze the evolution of related terminology as well as the research status of technology-enhanced learning spaces. Recent advances in technology-enhanced learning spaces will also be presented with reference to five representative projects, namely SCALE-UP, TEAL, TILE, Retrofitting University Learning Spaces and Future Classroom. Results show that research on technology-enhanced learning spaces is still in an early stage, yet it is already clear that there are common characteristics in the design of technology-enhanced learning space, such as highly flexible seating arrangements and facilities for instantaneous information sharing within and across groups. Latest relevant development in mainland China will be summarized. Suggestions and future research directions will be presented at the conclusion.
